So last week was a huge lottery jackpot and one person in Illinois won. The night before the jackpot I could not sleep so I just thought, what would I do if I won? What would be the very first thing I would do? Money is not always the answer to everything. But the idea of spending two dollars and winning almost $1 billion, many people can’t pass up that opportunity, including myself. The odds of winning are 1 in 600,000. I found an article with the math and the statistics on winning, and it is crazy to think how unlikely you are to win, but we’re so driven by that instant gratification of cash. Study show that 70% of people who win the lottery end up broke or bankrupt.
There are success stories for sure, but that is not the norm. Many people who are successful invest or create foundations, to use their money to help others
Back to my original question, what would you do first? For me I think the first thing I would do is pay off every loan I have to get rid of that stress and burden that’s always in the back of your head. But if you win $1 billion, of course you’re not taking that full amount home, you’re gonna come home with maybe 600 million. Most of us don’t have $1 million in debt so you’ve got a lot of money left over! I think after paying off my debt, I would move to my children and give them money to pay off their debt so they have that financial freedom. I’m a very altruistic person and I always want to help. After paying off my children’s debt, including school loans, I think I would buy them homes, if they wanted to have a new home. If they wanted to stay where they were, I’d help to buy improvements.
Now, after all this, I think I’d still have a lot of money left. What would be the next thing? Sure, I would buy a lot of jewelry because Bremer jewelry is my favorite place on the planet. But I think I would have great joy in donating to charities that I’m passionate about. But, one has to be careful because many people like the accolades you get when you donate. So are you donating for the accolades or the feel good reason to give money?
I’ve often thought how cool it would be to start a foundation for one of two things. One would be a foundation for families with children with type one diabetes. Many expenses happen with this disease and often times the burden can become overwhelming and since there’s no cure, the expenses are lifetime. The second foundation I would like to do would be something with either mental health and helping people navigate that or something with music and making sure music stays in the schools or helping musicians that are struggling. For me that would be the exciting thing to build a foundation to help people.
At the end of the day, there is a theme what I would want to do with my winnings is to make others lives easier. The joy I have with helping others is worth its weight and gold
